Adopting the Situation in School Questionnaire to Examine Physical Education Teachers’ Motivating and Demotivating Styles Using a Circumplex Approach

Grounded in SDT, several studies have highlighted the role of teachers’ motivating and demotivating styles for students’ motivation, learning, physical activity education (PE). However, most these focused on a restricted number strategies (e.g., offering choice) or dimensions autonomy support). Recently, researchers developed Situations-in-School (i.e., SIS-Education) questionnaire, which allows one to gain more integrative fine-grained insight into engagement autonomy-support, structure, control, chaos through circular structure circumplex). Although teaching PE resembles academic courses many ways, some items original situation-based questionnaire regarding homework) are irrelevant context. In present study, we therefore sought develop modified, PE-friendly version this earlier validated SIS-questionnaire—the SIS-PE. Findings sample Belgian (N = 136) French 259) teachers, examined together as independent samples, showed that variation adapted is also best captured by circumplex with four overarching eight subareas differing their level need support directiveness. The SIS-PE possesses excellent convergent concurrent validity. With adaptations being successful, great opportunities future research teachers (de-)motivating created.
